My Artists Statement

The lighting and wind at noon on Saturday, January 24, 2009 will never happen exactly the same again. This is why I love photography. I am not so vain as to think I can show the world what beauty is, but to show the world beauty that cannot be accessed again. In the digital age we live in, nothing can really go away. Our human connectedness serves as a web of information that is stored in people’s minds. How much of our memory is compromised or idealized? What our brains store may not be what really happened, but a photograph serves the purpose of showing the details, unchangeable, forever.

Research

What do I do? What inspires me?

Antiques inspire me. The history of individual pieces intrigues me. Objects aren't made today like they used to be. In the 1970s and 1980s, mass production really took off and producers thought more of "how cheap can I make this to make the most money?" instead of "how can I make a quality product that will last?"

My hometown was named the antique capital of the county. The shops in downtown Lebanon are all family owned and operated. It is a warm feeling when you walk in the door and are recognized as a regular customer.

Two of my favorite antique shops in town are Miller's Antique Market and Broadway Antique Mall. I like these places because not everything is in a protective glass case. A lot of things are, but the keys are always nearby.

Frequenting these shops not only give me visual stimulation, but give me a sense of what is important to the world- The objects that you see a lot of are the ones that used to be popular. All of the different shapes and colors, textures and materials provide a lot of inspiration. I can also look closely at the objects to see how they are really made. The longer I have been antiquing, the more I can recognize defining characteristics of a piece- what era it was from, what it's worth, and oftentimes how it was made.

My Creative Interests

I love antiquing. There is nothing more I enjoy in the world than discovering the story of a long lost object hidden on a dusty shelf. My favorite types of antique shops are the ones without display cases: where you can pick up and involve yourself with the object. Looking at pieces behind glass feels more like a museum of things that are in "Mint condition! No paint chipping! Look at this lovely smile on this pretty little doll from 1943!" I like the dirty old things. The wear and tear they show depict the love that surround the object, or the difficulties it had to face.

I love photography. Taking pictures allows me to capture a moment and remember it with physical evidence. Never again will the lighting be quite the same, or will the wind lift the same pieces of hair. That moment will never happen again, but I captured it.

The combining of these two worlds allow me to document the journey I'm on, saving my moments for my children, my grandchildren, or a 21 year old artist in an antique shop looking for ideas in the year 2052.

Below are some of my works combine photography and my love of antiques.
