When I was making the work I showed the class, it was my intention that it address
the following issues: nightmares and antiques. Although antiques are not an issue per say, they are something that I enjoy working with. Making this work, I was a bit lost at the time and had little direction so I used something that I enjoyed to figure out what I wanted to do. I work with nightmares because it is a subject that I struggle with personally. I used to have many nightmares, and believe that was something that everyone could relate with. Since working on the nightmare series, I have had very few nightmares. For this reason, I would like to continue with this idea in some aspect of my work.

However, now with hindsight and perspective, I can see that the work addresses instead (or as well as) the following issues: (In this section you should not only state your opinion, but support it. In order to do so, make sure you describe what is actually seen in the work in terms of content or its technical qualities.)

However, now with hindsight and perspective, I can see that the work with antiques also addresses the relationship between objects made now and object made before mass production and greediness took hold of the production industry. Items were made with such high quality before the 1970’s and now they are made to sell quickly, no matter how poor the quality. For example, a telephone made in the 1950’s (granted it was not used as often and did far less than phones of today) can still be plugged in today to have a chat. Ask any teenager how many phones they go through a year. Many have multiple phones. The iPhone gets dropped once and shatters. The pocket watch seen in one of the images I showed was made in the 1880’s. Even though it is over 130 years old, it still winds and functions as properly as it did when it was new.

Accordingly, in my initial thesis work, I will focus my attention on… (fill in the blank as desired, addressing both content and technique. Also, explain why you will be focusing on those things.)

Accordingly, in my initial thesis work, I will focus my attention on the antiques. I will leave the nightmares elsewhere. I would like to continue to do antique still lives, but I would also like to experiment with images of single objects. The new process I would like to try would to be to shoot photos in film, then develop the film. I will then scan the film into the computer to be able to manipulate the image digitally and print digitally. The process I will use is important because it also brings up a dialogue of new versus old and the technological comparison between the antiques and the advancements.
